Ass-Poking Devil?

Just finished my SCISS talk. In page 7 of my slides, you can find a devil poking a node. I was told that it looks like the devil is poking the node's ass. Not sure why... Anyway, my favorite is the blinking and smoking owl in the last page.

Another good thing I found about SCISS is that it gave me a perfect excuse for not helping a friend moving... :)

Yaouch...

I'm supposed to be busy with preparing for my crappyinteresting SCISS presentation these days, but I just can't ignore how hot the Rockets have been in the last two games (and particularly Yao last night; a bit Yaouch for Dallas). This is despite the comment I posted saying that Rockets will lose in 6 games. Well, it is still possible, if Dallas wins next 4, but I'd gladly see that I'm proven wrong.

Whining Helps

Yes it does. Since my post, Firefox has released 1.0.3. Guess what? It doesn't crash more than once a day now! And it is much faster now, particularly when you go to Google maps... I think I can stop thinking about converting to Opera or K-Meleon now.

The Day of the Ngan

Just saw The Year of the Yao. A fair documentary, so not much passionate comments. Just put it this way, if you like Yao, you'd probably enjoy it. Otherwise, don't bother.

Road Trip Updates

My plan for the Seattle road trip has changed. The original plan would probably still be used, but only for the return trip, so that the routes would be different. For the departure, the new plan is to suffer a boring stop on the first day but get good cities for the other 3 nights. This means Tucumcari (New Mexico), Las Vegas (Nevada), Reno (Nevada), and Portland (Oregon). This would let me to arrive Seattle early on the last day to have some rest.

Firefox, my Lord

Firefox my Lord, please stop crashing! Yes, I am begging you! I even took the advise on uninstalling and then re-installing you. At least don't crash for more than 10 times a day, please!!!

The Old Heidelberg

I went to this German restaurant last night. The potato soup is spicy and pretty good. I also had the Sauerbraten, pretty good too, a bit too sweet for me though, but I guess it is authentic. But the service is really sloooooooow (European style?). Even though there were only 3 or 4 tables, we had to wait for 15 mins for the waitress to collect our dishes after we have finished our dinner. The overall experience was fine, but I guess this is the kind of place you only go very occasionally...

Road Trip to Seattle

I have decided that driving to Seattle for my internship is a good idea. The current plan to is take the time, spending 4 days to get there, probably staying overnight at Wichita (Kansas), Salt Lake City (Utah), and Boise (Idaho), with a brief stay at Denver (Colorado) and maybe also Dallas (Texas). I'll try to push into 3 days on the return trip, due to time constrains. Oh, I'm so excited already!

Other than getting there alive, my goal is also to limit to at most one driving ticket per state, i.e., no more than 9 tickets overall. I'll keep you posted on the result...

Want to Intern in Amazon?

If you want a summer internship, and think that I would not mind seeing you in Seattle in the summer, drop me a line, and I might refer you there. (Of course, you still have to be a guru in C++, Java, and Unix.) I can really use the $25 gift certificate referral bonus... I'm going there for the summer, by the way, in case you haven't heard.

It's also a good contrast: other research labs that want to make me an offer have financial problems, yet Amazon is hunger for more interns...

Yao Restaurant and Bar

About 1.5 months after its opening, I finally went to Yao, for a celebration. The decoration is just fine, generally give you a feeling of old Shanghai. Of course, we tried their top signature dish, Peking Duck. It's probably not surprising that the duck is very, very authentic, as they have a dedicated chef for the duck. Their waiters are not Chinese, and seem to have a lack of understanding to the food. It is also a bit pricey, but is not unreasonable for its class, or the class it emulates. I guess I'll only go there again when I host some friends from outside Houston.

Soooo Disappointed...

So I did go to Fry's early at 7:50am. There were 3xx people already queuing there, but I managed to get in after about half an hour. What can I say? Completely disappointed! There are a few deals, but nothing comparable to a real Grand Opening Sales deal. What a waste of my time...
