Faculty Application: Why?
I applied for faculty position for two reasons: (1) fun and (2) nothing to lose. The latter one may not be true any more. Although I put zero hope of landing a job, it is still depressing to keep being rejected, especially when twice a day, with zero piece of positive news.
What's surprising is that from the two schools that told me the number of applicants, each school is receiving around 500. They are not even the top 5. So the chance of getting an interview is less than 2%, while getting an offer is probably around 0.2%. Where do all these people come from?
