Internship application = paper review?

I received an interesting email today. It was from someone who has just read my resume for my internship application. No, it's not about offering me a position. He, based on my resume, has decided that my research interest is close enough to one of the papers he is reviewing, that he invites me to review the paper for him. And, of course, I accepted (no need to explain why, right? :)...

Firefox: the start or the end?

Despite being a huge Firefox fans, its frequent crashing on my aging laptop has made a bit impatient lately. Seeing the release of 0.9, I've finally given K-Meleon a try. It was lightening fast on my PIII 600MHz laptop, I'm ready to ditch Firefox any time if there are equavalence of adblock and RSRemover in K-Meleon.

Drink. Drive. Go to Jail.

Yeah, you can see billboards with this assertion all around in Texas. But probably it would be more interesting this way: "Code. Release. Go to Jail." Lost? Have a look here.

Finally an update

Haven't updated the blog for a couple of days. The reason? Plain laziness. I guess it is the time for me to switch from almost daily to occassionally :)

Just a continuation from the last entry, finally blog spam (or they call comment spam) has became disgusting enough that the major players are now cooperating to fix the problem. By making sure that adding those links would not improve the pages' search engine ranks, it removes the biggest incentive for spamming in blogs. Looks like it will work...

More Blog Spams

Interestingly, they are still on the same blog entry. The very same entry published a while ago. Worse than emails, I have to actually go and manually delete them.

Rockets... Again!

I have finally seen another Rockets game live. The first time for a while, particularly after they have traded another of my favorite players, JJ, away. I hated when this happened, but today's game is the single best Rockets' game I've ever seen. Looks like Rockets is finally becoming a fast, offensive team that is exciting to watch.

Appledaily free hack

Yet another interesting search referral to my blog. Someone from Canada came to my blog while googling "Appledaily free hack", apparently looking for ways to read Appledaily outside Hong Kong for free. I guess probably he hasn't, but had he read my blog closely enough, he would have found a way to do so...

Coffin

Q: What is the ugliest car model in the market?
Ans: Honda Element. Its complete rectangular shape makes it really look like a coffin transporter taking the box for burial...

IPTPS

IPTPS notifications have been sent for almost three weeks now, and there is still no accepted paper list on their homepage.

Why would I care, anyway? Their trend is to accept bs papers that only invoke arguments that are hardly worth serious considerations afterwards, and reject papers on concrete, practical issues...

And I'm not saying it because of jealousy or hatred. I used to be an IPTPS author and since I didn't submit this year, I did not get rejected.

IRS!!!

Gosh, just got a visitor from IRS to my blog. Hopefully I'm not under investigation...

Switched to Open Proxy

I'm fed up running a ssh to HKU just to forward http traffic so that I can visit web sites that are free only within HK. So I finally dug up some open proxies in HK and use them instead. This is my automatic proxy configuration that would forward all traffic to website.com to my three hand-picked open proxies. Nothing complicated here, just in case anyone could make use of it. Remember to replace website.com to whatever web site you wish to use the proxies.
function FindProxyForURL(url, host)

{
if (dnsDomainIs(host, '.website.com'))
{
return 'PROXY 202.67.155.247:8080; PROXY 202.130.84.133:80; PROXY 203.198.78.241:80';
}
else
{
return 'DIRECT';
}
}

Police Quest I

To further waste my time, I've started to play another game: Police Quest I. The original EGA version. It was my 2nd favorite from Sierra. I liked its simple interface for driving and the poker game near the end. Maybe I'll replay the VGA remake version after I finished it.

It also made me realized that I have not been productive for more than one month, essentially since passing my C-exam. With this progress, I won't be able to graduate before I'm 40...

MapIt 0.5 Broken

MapIt is one of the newer Mozilla/Firefox extension that I installed and actually liked. It is so convenience to select an address and then get a map within two clicks. It used to have problems parsing addresses and required human intervention in most of the time. I just updated it to the latest 0.5 and it is completely broken now. It seems like Firefox failed to even parse its source code... Is it really that hard to get an extension right?
